Sunbathing Man Spotted on Top of Wind Turbine
by Nathan Vickers
A drone captured a Benedictine monk sunbathing on a 164-foot-tall wind turbine. The sunbathing monk was spotted by Kevin Miller, a pilot from California. He was in Rhode Island, which is where the incident took place, on vacation.
Miller was touring the ground of the Portsmouth Abbey School when his drone captured the man sunbathing. Miller said that the sunbather must have been in the middle of a nap because it took him a good five to 10 seconds to notice the drone. However, once the sunbather heard the drone, he ended up sitting up to take a look, according to New York Daily News.
The sunbather was identified as Brother Joseph Byron. He confirmed that he was enjoying some solitude and peace, but the sunbathing man was startled when he saw the drone.
According to Fox, Bryon gave a wave to the camera as the drone started to edge in for a closer look.
The sunbathing man does not appear to be afraid of heights, as the wind turbine he chooses to sunbath on stands at 240 feet. That’s from the ground to the highest blade, which is 77 feet long. Apparently, he has been sunbathing up there for the last nine years, after the wind turbine’s 2006 construction. The sunbathing spot provides Bryon with peace, as well as views of a nearby bay.
The only thing that appeared to be unusual to the sunbather was the fact that he was disturbed by the drone, which he has never seen before. He did say that it was annoying, and that it seems that people just can’t go anywhere in order to get away.
Miller said that when the sunbather saw him bring his drone down, Bryon was leaning over the edge. He added that he just looked up at him and waved, and Bryon ended up waving back.
In the footage, the sunbather can be seen shrugging his shoulders with his hands in the air. This was after the drone was hovering around him for nearly a whole minute.
The video of the sunbathing man was uploaded two days ago to YouTube. Since then, the clip of the sunbather has gone viral, racking up almost hundreds of thousands of views.
As for the sunbather, apparently he has plans to go back up the turbine, but it might not be anytime soon. He said that he’ll end up waiting a while before he does go back up there.
